To make these compositions I place small portions of my hair and Artforum magazine cutouts onto clear 35mm film; then, I insert the film into the darkroom enlarger where light passes through the film and the objects project onto light sensitive paper. The results are these images of fruits, vegetables, and plants. The Artforum magazine cutouts reveal their provenance through the transparency of the pages. Bringing these two materials together, the series creates a clash between the organic and the synthetic: elements from my body alongside mass-produced literature. As well, this piece considers an ongoing loss of belonging; representing my homeland’s nature through the literary material of a foreign land and an art world that has historically sidelined Latin American artists.
