Mass Graves/Fosas Comunes, 2025

5'6" x 2'2" Inkjet prints and wood

The series Mass Graves/Fosas Comunes emerges from the ongoing struggle of mothers across Mexico seeking to find the places where their abducted loved ones have been buried, seeking closure and using grief to resist uncertainty. The work in this series uses enlarged thread compositions to recreate these found bones and their dual existence as both  remnants of violence and delicate reminders of life. The use of the tape and the material qualities of the thread and clear film also allow me to place the topographical qualities of the mass graves in conversation with the forensic legacy of the photographic medium, reconsidering how black and white images can render land and death beyond the visual language of law enforcement. Life size carcasses, involves the audience’s body in the funerary rite.

This artwork was presented alongside a fundraising program for the collective Madres Buscadoras de Sonora. More information on their efforts: https://www.facebook.com/madresbuscadorasdesonora.
