Evasive (Paul Strand’s The Mexican Portfolio), 2024.
Twenty 5 x 6 photo prints
Produced as part of the Smart Scholar Research Grant, with accompanying written research project.
My analysis challenged art historical readings that treated Strand’s work as comprehensive representations of Mexican identity, engaging with historical precedents on the conflicting relationship between images and representation. This pieces comprises 20 individual photographs, mirroring the portfolio's size, each depicting a spotlight that moves across every frame, radiating beyond my gaze’s and camera's control. My aim was to capture the vitality and independence of the communities scrutinized in Strand’s work while addressing the larger impossibility of caging truth through photographic representation.
